Astral Projection and Out of Body Experience (OBE) – Parakaya Pravesam in Siddhar Terms
Astral projection, also known as an Out of Body Experience (OBE) or Parakaya Pravesam in Siddhar terms, has long been a fascinating topic among parapsychologists.
When we read about Koodu Vittu Koodu Paithal (Parakaya Pravesam) in books or see it on television, we might think it’s not possible. However, there is a live example: Adi Shankaracharya.
Even movies like Teddy (Tamil), Doctor Strange (Hollywood), and Taxi Wala (Telugu) explore OBE. If you have read my article on psychic power, you will already be familiar with Astral Projection (please refer to it).
Adi Shankaracharya and Parakaya Pravesha
Adi Shankaracharya traveled across India, engaging scholars in religious debates. During one such debate, Bharati, the wife of scholar Madana Mishra, attempted to defeat Adi Shankara on the topic of Kamashastra (sex).
To win this debate, Adi Shankaracharya performed Parakaya Pravesha, entering another person's body. In the debate between Madana Mishra and Adi Shankara, Bharati was the judge, as she was a scholar herself. Madana Mishra was easily defeated by Adi Shankara.
Bharati contended that Adi Shankara had only defeated one half of Madana Mishra and to completely defeat him, he had to defeat his wife too. Realizing she could not defeat Adi Shankara in philosophy, Bharati turned the debate towards Kamashastra.
As a Brahmachari, Adi Shankara had no knowledge of sex. He requested a month’s time to debate this topic with her. Adi Shankaracharya stayed in a king's body for a month, learned Kamasutra, and eventually won the debate with Bharati.
Scientific View of Astral Projection
During astral projection, there is a connection between the astral body and the physical body, often referred to as the "silver cord", which allows the astral body to return to the physical body.
Out of Body Experiences occur when the body is in a non-awake, non-dreaming stage of brain wave activity. The brain's alpha activity slows down, and there is no indication of activation within the autonomic nervous system.
Scientific Study on OBE
A study was conducted on a 24-year-old woman who claimed to have experienced OBE since childhood. Scientists gave her four questionnaires and asked her to perform multiple ECEs (Extra-Corporeal Experiences) while a machine measured her brain activity.
The results were surprising. During Astral Projection:
- The supplementary motor area, cerebellum, and anterior superior temporal gyrus showed increased activity.
- The cuneus and lingual gyrus showed decreased activity.
There are many books that provide extensive information on OBE. If you ever feel like you have experienced OBE in a sleeping state, consider monitoring your brain activity and recording your experiences with the help of an expert.
Galen once said, “Do not believe whatever you read and hear. Observe and experience yourself to know the truth.”
