The Shocking History of Human Sacrifice: A Story from the Incan Empire

The Shocking History of Human Sacrifice: A Story from the Incan Empire

I thought to start writing from 2022. But now I feel I must write after reading this post. Why do I have to wait for time when I have something to share?

Today, while clearing my mailbox (which had 65,000 unread emails), I stumbled upon a mail from a website I had subscribed to during college named Ancient Origins. The article I read truly shocked me.

While I know that human sacrifice was common in the past, this article presented a particularly distressing story. Between 1440 and 1480, a 12–15-year-old Incan girl named Momia Juanita was sacrificed on Mount Ampato to prevent natural calamities.

The ritual sacrifice, called Capacocha (or Qhapaq hucha), was a key component of the Inca Empire. This ritual, which often involved the sacrifice of children, was conducted during celebratory events such as:

  • Annual or biennial events in the Incan calendar
  • The death of an emperor
  • The birth of a royal son
  • A victory in battle

These sacrifices were believed to prevent natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, droughts, earthquakes, and epidemics.

Beyond celebratory events and preventive measures, child sacrifice represented the Inca Empire's military and political expansion, showcasing their ability to use coercion and control.

As a tribute payment, Inca rulers ordered boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 to be sacrificed. Evidence from strontium analysis suggests that children were selected from various geographical areas, brought to the Inca capital, and underwent months of travel to the sacred location of their death.

At just 12 years old, this innocent girl hadn't even started to live her life. How many children and people might have lost their lives like this?

Thank goodness human sacrifice is largely banished today. (Although it is said that in some regions, human sacrifices may still be practiced, I am not sure.) Otherwise, someone might have suggested human sacrifice to save us all from COVID-19.

Thank you, Bholenath!
